The best weekends only cost a tank of fuel.

This past weekend saw us pack up the car and head south. It is always these times that we love the most. The back of the Navara is packed with eskies, towels, pillows, food & clothes. Swimming togs ready and waiting for a beach, waterfall or creek. It was Georgia's turn to plan the trip as it was her birthday week. We headed straight for Byron Bay. Spent the birthday money on skateboards, shoes, handbag, dress & sunnies. Then headed straight to the beach. It was already quite hot & the beach was bursting with people. The last time we were at Byron, hubby and I spent the day kayaking with dolphins. Today was all about family time so we stayed at the beach.

Back into the car and we were off to Killen Falls. Magic is the only way to describe this place. It's not too far from Byron yet far enough away to feel like you are in a whole other world. We had a picnic lunch, swim & it was a perfect chance for some photos. It was quite an adventure to walk down to the bottom of the falls and then walk back up along the side of the creek to get back to the waterhole. Not an easy walk but definitely worth it! We saw spiders as big as our heads, a snake in the bush and a baby turtle in the water. The kids loved every minute of it.

Hubby wanted to keep driving south so we had a quick stop at Lennox Heads to cool down at the beach & drive up to the lookout. We encountered another snake at the beach. A brown snake that had some of the local boys screaming like little girls! We had to walk straight past it to get to the beach and it was a little nerve racking but totally worth it when you saw the beach.

It was then time to fit in some family time and spend the night with my Dad at the Gold Coast. More birthday cake, a BBQ & movie before we all crashed for the night.

We were up bright and early in hopes that the surfing comp would be on but the waves were not playing nice, ok there was no swell at all, so we headed inland to the Currumbin Rock Pools for a morning swim. What a perfect little spot for families. I have heard about it many times over the years but this was our first visit. It will definitely not be the last.

It is those road trip weekends that are the ones our family loves the most. All in the car together, music pumping, everyone singing along and then all piling out at the next stop to see what adventure awaits. And all it costs is a tank of diesel for the 4wd. The best weekends don't have to cost the earth. If you want to visit any of the places that we visited, just google them to find out more. I am sure it will only be a couple of weeks till we are back in the car doing another road trip. We have to fit in as many as possible before winter starts.
